Academic use

AlgoJudge as a case study in computer science education

In the 2023/24 and 2024/25 academic years, AlgoJudge provided the context for lectures, workshops and project work at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.

Academic use

A real project as a learning context

Students analysed the use case of an automated solution evaluation system, explored technologies used in modern applications and connected design decisions with collaborative software engineering practice.

Nicolaus Copernicus University

The classes took place at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science in Toruń.

Two editions

The programme ran in the 2023/24 and 2024/25 academic years.

Lecture, workshop and project

Introductory knowledge led into case analysis and practical teamwork.

Patryk Kisielewski

Instructor and coordinator of the AlgoJudge and AlgoJudge2 courses.

01

Problem and use-case analysis

AlgoJudge grounded software engineering topics in a concrete system with multiple cooperating parts.

  • Systems that automatically evaluate programming solutions
  • Comparison of similar solutions, their strengths, weaknesses and differences
  • Analysis of requirements, functionality and priorities
  • Interface, data model and proof-of-concept design
02

Modern application technologies

The programme covered technologies and tools in the context of developing a web application.

  • C# and the .NET platform
  • Object-relational mapping
  • TypeScript and React component libraries
  • Docker containers and the Git version control system
03

Collaborative software development

The workshop introduction continued through project tasks and discussion of technical decisions.

  • Weekly sprints and the Scrum methodology
  • Design patterns and open-source licences
  • Implementation, deployment and delivery automation
  • Technical documentation and multiple forms of testing
Two consecutive editions

From project foundations to advanced teamwork

The official course programmes show continuity between the classes and a shift in emphasis as the analysed project developed.

2023/241000-SR-AlgoJudge

Analysis and proof of concept

The first edition focused on understanding the problem, defining requirements and preparing the project foundations.

  • Analysis of existing applications
  • Requirements and feature priorities
  • Interface mock-ups and the data model
  • Preparation of a proof of concept
